How does UVC Work?
Figure 1: The UV Light Spectrum Diagram 2018, UV Guard, accessed 5th May, 2020, https://uvguard.com/knowledge-centre/.
Ultraviolet radiation as visible light or radio waves, electromagnetic radiation and cannot be perceived by the human eye. It is defined as comprising the spectral range from 100 and 380 nm and closes thus directly to the blue, visible part of the light.
The high-energy UVC radiation causes a photochemical reaction. The wavelength at 253.7 nm is absorbed by the cell nucleic acids and lead, depending on the radiation dose, to a molecular rearrangement of the micro-organism’s DNA, to kill or damage bacteria and fungal spores. The UVC radiation is therefore targeted for degradation or destruction of microorganisms (e.g. bacteria/viruses, yeasts and moulds).
